Petra Houses Petra Traditional Constructions was established in response to the slow eradication of the island's distinct architectural style in Corfu's villages and all over the countryside. Many foreigners who purchased an old village house for renovation have been disappointed when, once the building was renovated, the characteristic features they chose it for had been destroyed by insensitive builders. Buyers wishing for a newly-built property had little choice other than to go for a standard concrete box, identical to all the others. Petra offers an alternative. Its renovations exploit the traditional features of the building, and restore them as appropriate. We call this process 'reantiquation'. The company's new developments are small and friendly, with no more than half a dozen properties on any one site. Generally, the houses are built using traditional materials, in the form of a hamlet, and appear from the outside to have been constructed centuries ago. Depending on planning zone, they may or may not be somehow constructionally linked, while at the same time their positioning ensures the privacy of the owner. Indoors, they are well planned, and give the impression of being much larger than their actual footprint size. Each house is slightly different in appearance and layout, so that there is no feeling of being on a housing estate. The traditional materials that are incorporated into the design include old Byzantine rooftiles, chemical-free limewash paint, and many fittings salvaged from ruins. In this way, buyers save on local resources, as well as helping to keep the price down - and for the first time, they provide buyers in Corfu with affordable housing which does not impinge, either aesthetically or environmentally, on the local landscape. Price: from 135,000 euros Plots currently available: To request further details about any of these properties please click here. |
